TCHS President Catherine Loke will be giving a talk on
Biodiversity in a Bucket
The word “biodiversity” typically brings to mind some exotic habitat featured in a documentary narrated by David Attenborough.
Beyond the current attention given to climate change, Catherine will present a holistic view of sustainability and the importance of biodiversity to human health and survival. She will explain how fossil fuels enabled the growth of cities and how urban environments became sanitized and sterilized by necessity, leading to biodiversity loss as more and more land became urbanized or cleared for farmland to supply food to cities.
Catherine will share her insights on how city dwellers can move towards living within planetary boundaries through an understanding of biological systems. She will empower you to make a difference by applying permaculture principles in an urban environment, and demonstrate some practical tips on what you can do to embrace the web of life and complete natural cycles through the simple act of composting.
